Progress Corticon Business Rules Engine enables rapid deployment of rules in both Java and .NET; new interface promotes collaboration between IT and business analysts

WESTFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Progress today announced the latest release of Progress® Corticon® Business Rules Management System (BRMS). The Corticon Rules without Limits system makes it possible for business and IT professionals to collaborate on business rule development, execution and management and deploy on either Java or .NET platforms. The announcement was made at the Progress Users Group (PUG) Challenge Americas 2015, being held at the Westford Regency Inn and Conference Center, Westford, Mass., June 7-10.

According to IDC, the BRMS market is expected to exceed $500 million in 2015 and comprises stand-alone products that are typically sold to independent software vendors (ISVs) or internal development organizations of larger enterprises.1 The BRMS market is growing in the high single digit rates as it leverages growing interest in model-driven application development platforms.

Business Rules Engines have become particularly popular in industries where applications rely on complex rules, policy or regulations such as case management, complicated pricing structures, insurance and claims processing, pension administration, banking or governmental benefits eligibility situations. With the Corticon Rules without Limits system, rule authors can build, develop, test and deploy rules in their platform of choice-Java or .NET. With easier management of business rules across multiple servers for easier adoption and scaling, rules can be shared more easily across applications, business lines or even companies.

"Progress Corticon helps our 175,000 members choose from among 220 standardized forms for their residential real estate transactions. The rules governing which forms to use change frequently in response to changes in the law, best practices and changes in the text of the forms themselves. We needed a BRMS that worked 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and with the assurance that our system's recommendations were informed by the expertise of our legal staff," said Josh Sharfman, CTO, CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®. "Corticon enabled us to develop and deploy a solution that cut customer service calls down by 30 percent in the first six months of evaluation alone. We look forward to using Corticon 5.5 more fully and anticipate that these new features will continue to enhance our implementation of Corticon - especially as we expand its use to assist REALTORS® in other areas of regulatory compliance and financial reporting."

Progress has consistently built on its history of product innovation to make the Corticon BRMS the industry's leading business rules engine. In addition to cross-platform support, other key new features in Corticon BRMS 5.5 include:

  • Rule flow branching, including improved flexibility and ease of use for the creation of complex decision services and large rule flows, while maintaining full backwards compatibility with existing ruleflows.
  • Adaptive and reusable rule flows, including a modular approach for easier ruleflow creation.
  • Improved thread pooling for decision service execution and support for auto-scaling.
  • A new high performance logging subsystem, allowing log files to be used as an audit trail for runtime execution.
  • REST API for server management of custom control over server configuration and deployment.

Progress Corticon BRMS delivers high-quality, high-fidelity, high-performance automated business decisions. It helps increase agility of decision change processes and enables new insights into the connections between individual recurring decisions and business performance. By separating decisions from processes, the Corticon system helps both business and IT users quickly create or reuse business rules. Moreover, business analysts can identify, automate and deploy business rules and decision systems in collaboration with IT, without the need for expensive custom coding.

"Today many corporate IT departments have a mix of .NET and Java environments, driving the need for a BRMS that supports both developer communities," said Dr. Mark Allen, Vice President, Decision Analytics at Progress. "With this release, Progress continues to drive the standalone BRMS market by delivering a new product that works seamlessly across platforms, while also providing the most intuitive interface to promote collaboration between business and IT, bringing a new level of visibility around ever-changing regulatory and compliance demands."
